Trump v Biden LIVE updates: First presidential debate to get under way ahead of US election

Voters are unenthusiastic about both candidates – but for different reasons.

At 81 years, Biden is considered by some too old to effectively perform as president. Donald Trump, no youngster himself, at 78, has been found guilty of falsifying business records to cover up an affair with a porn star.

In addition to making him the first ex-US president to be criminally convicted, he has been impeached by the House twice, and is blamed for fomenting a siege of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Still, the US voter appears equally unimpressed.

Biden and Trump are each entering the debate with low favorability ratings. About six in 10 American adults say they have a very or somewhat unfavorable view of Biden, and a similar number have a negative view of Trump.

Most Americans, 56 per cent, say they are “very” or “somewhat” dissatisfied with Biden being the Democratic Party’s likely nominee for president, and a similar majority are dissatisfied with Trump as the likely GOP nominee. The poll indicates that Republicans continue to be more satisfied with a re-nomination of Trump than Democrats are with an anticipated Biden re-nomination. Six in 10 Republicans are satisfied with Trump as a nominee; just 42 per cent of Democrats say that about Biden.

About three in 10 US adults are dissatisfied with both Trump and Biden as their party’s likely nominees – with independents and Democrats being more likely than Republicans to be dissatisfied with both.
