As any parent knows, finding the right toddler bed can be tough. There are so many choices out there, but many of them just don’t quite hit the mark—either they’re not very practical or just not that cute to look at, or they are painted in colors that don’t quite work for your room’s decor.
Henna Luokkanen, a crafty DIYer who shares her projects on @mycozynooks, took matters into her own hands and turned a classic white IKEA toddler bed into a cute boho piece.
Her trick? Sanding!
“I wanted to have a wood-colored bed for my daughter that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg,” Henna explained. So I thought, why not do it myself?”
The hack involved restoring the bed to its original state by stripping its painted surface to reveal the natural wood grains. While not every IKEA toddler bed lends itself to such a transformation, the SUNDVIK extendable bed—with its main parts made from solid pine—was the perfect candidate for this IKEA hack.

How To Makeover The IKEA SUNDVIK Toddler Bed
Step 1: Sand the Paint Off the Bed
The process began by sanding down all the white components of the bed frame using various sanders and grits of sandpaper.

“First, I sanded down all the pieces of the solid pine frame that were white, excluding the middle portion of the footboard and headboard. Those parts are not timber,” Henna shared.
Tools Used
Employing a trio of sanders – a Bosch Belt Sander, an Ozito Random Orbital Sander, and a Skil Orbital Sander – along with sandpaper of varying grits, she meticulously smoothed the surfaces to prep them for paint. “I would probably be able to use only one sander, but I wanted to explore the differences because I didn’t have previous experience before this project,” she explained the different sanders.
Step 2: Stain the IKEA Toddler Bed
Once all the wood pieces were sanded, it was time to stain. “I used Cabot’s Benchtop Paint for a clear satin finish,” she revealed. With each component well coated in natural wood tone, she let them dry thoroughly before assembling the bed.
Step 3: Attaching the Cane Webbing to the Bed Frame
“Then I soaked the rattan,” Henna explained. “It is easier to attach and not so stiff to work with when you soak the rattan first.” Employing a staple gun, she mounted the supple rattan to the bed headboard and footboard, creating a rustic, organic texture to the plain toddler bed.
Step 4: Surround with Trim
“After that, I cut moldings to a 45-degree miter joint and added them on top of the rattan, creating a frame that makes the edges look better,” she described. Bullethead nails secured the moldings in place, with any exposed nail holes concealed with spackling paste for a seamless finish.
Step 5: Adding the Finishing Touches
As a final flourish, Henna glued hand-carved wood appliques onto the bed frame using Liquid Nails adhesive, adding decorative embellishments.
The result is a unique, textured toddler bed with bohemian flair. “I love the overall look and the rattan details I added,” said Henna of her handiwork.

Henna’s rattan bed makeover looks good as the star of her toddler’s bedroom. What used to be a plain white IKEA bed is now a super cool boho-chic piece. The natural wood colors and woven rattan detailing fit with the rest of the wooden furniture and earthy vibe.
Before the makeover, that basic white bed would have looked so out of place and stuck out like a sore thumb against all the warm, natural tones in the room. But now, with the rattan weaving, light stained wood, and carved embellishments, it blends in beautifully. The textured rattan goes perfectly with the grainy wood, creating a cohesive nature-inspired look.
What we love most is how accessible this hack is, with no need for complex tools. You only need to sand the parts down to expose the wooden bed, then stain in the shade you want. Easy peasy.
The best part is that even with the upgrades, the SUNDVIK bed still has that extendable feature to grow with her kid. So you can bet this upgraded bed is going to last her little one for years to come. Henna leveled things up in the cutest way possible.
