Soccer fans ‘stuck in the city’ amid Transperth train chaos

Chaos is erupting on Perth’s railways as several train lines carting fans to the coveted AC Milan and AS Roma match at Optus Stadium tonight were suddenly delayed before the game.

Half of the city’s train lines were unexpectedly struck with technical issues just 45 minutes before kick-off on Friday night.

Transperth put out several statements about the service delays affecting the Fremantle, Armadale and Midland lines.

“Trains on the Armadale Line are currently delayed due to a technical issue,” the first statement said.

“Trains will continue to run however, they will not be running to the regular schedule.

“Please allow extra travelling time and be aware that delayed trains may not connect with timetabled bus and train services.”

Two minutes later — a similar statement about Fremantle and Midland was released.

“Trains on the Fremantle and Midland Lines are currently delayed due to a technical issue,” it said.

“Trains will continue to run; however, they will not be running to the regular schedule.

“Please allow extra travelling time and be aware that delayed trains may not connect with timetabled bus and train services.”

Transperth issued its third statement at 7.19pm confirming the issue was still causing delays. It is believed the problem is causing trains to travel slower than usual.

Transperth has been contacted for further comment.

It comes as more than 50,000 fans are expected to flock to Optus Stadium for the friendly between AC Milan and AS Roma on Friday night. This is being touted as another coup for WA following the successful WWE blockbuster in February.

Fans took to social media to express their dismay at the untimely delays.

“Ugly, ugly scenes at Perth Station. Thousands of people are choking the platforms and growing angrier by the second,” one person posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Another user posted a photo of a packed tunnel at the Perth underground station tunnel, just 25 minutes before the match started.
